Ramblin’ Round

Posted by sue on June 20th, 2007

Len just got back from his Massachusetts business trip yesterday, and tomorrow morning we’re flying to Madrid to meet my sister Diana and her husband Tim for some travelling around Spain! We’re spending much of the first week in the north of Spain and southern France in Basque country, then the second week will be the south of Spain and Portugal.

Life in Lisbon is solidifying in time for our trip: we enrolled in Portuguese lessons starting in July and I got a job offer today to teach English in the fall, which I probably will accept.

Are you abandoning your Arabic studies?

Good luck keeping Diana in line. Seriously, she said that she would bring home chocolate, so make sure you find some.

Brogan says that he misses you.

    Hi guys,

I miss you lots! I am glad you are getting a visit from Diana and that life is good in Portugal. Did you know that Brazilian Portuguese is very different from the “continental” Portuguese? I think that merits a language trip to Brazil so you can compare.

    Big hugs,

    Jeanene

Yay I’m commenting. How have you been since I ran off? I’m finally back in Chicago (two days ago) after a month and a half in Pittsburgh and a few trips to Maryland and Louisiana and I’m kind of bored already. Pittsburgh is interesting… I met a ton of Serbians and my neighborhood was fifty percent Jewish. I learned a lot of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian/whateveryoucallit and I had 150+ hours of language-teacher observations… (She could work on her monitoring and limited her TTT, at least when she was speaking English, and at first she had some rapport issues but eventually we learned that she wasn’t as scary as she seemed, and that, yes, she did know how to smile.)

So did you accept the job, Susan? Where is it? When do you start? How are the Portuguese classes coming? Are you going to try to keep up the Arabic while you’re in Lisbon? Am I asking too many questions?

Speaking of Arabic, my roommate for next year is from Lebanon. She’s still there and has only been to the States a couple times on vacation, but she has a scholarship to study broadcast journalism at Maryland. We’ve been emailing every other day or so for a couple weeks, and today out of the blue her postscript was “P.S. I speak Arabic and can teach you if you want.” Awww. That’s sweet but I think that would take a lot more time than she’s willing to devote to it. But who knows maybe I’ll learn a word or two and/or visit her in Lebanon someday…

Also. I was driving in Maryland last week, and I didn’t see any “Drive Gently” signs BUT I did almost rear-end a semi truck with combustible freight on the highway! That was exciting… My uncle lent me my cousin’s old car that no one drives anymore and the breaks were a little sub-par to say the least. As in, sometimes they didn’t work at all. If the truck hadn’t speed up at the last minute I would have hit it. Thank you, truck.

Anyway, hope you are well, stay out of trouble, don’t drive cars with bad breaks, and enjoy Lisboa for me. :)
