America Does Fish Funny

Posted by len on May 15th, 2007

It took 6+ months and thousands of dollars but we finally confirmed: The U.S. serves fish unlike every other country in the world.
What I’m talking about is getting fish at a restaurant.
Every restaurant I’ve ever been to in the U.S. (save for the Mexican joints) serves fish extracted and de-boned, looking like a piece of chicken breast or the like.
In contrast, every country we’ve meandered into thus far serves fish whole, usually with one googly eye staring up at you, making sure you ponder, at least for a moment, the little feller’s brief aquatic history you just helped bring to its finale.

So…does the eye bother you? Do you chop off the head and then hide it under a napkin? I guess since we don’t serve any other animal with its eyeballs still in it, we don’t serve fish that way either. There are exceptions of course.

Portugal doesn’t seem to serve any other food with eyeballs glaring.
I think that’s a very good thing. Any eye ball bigger than a fish and you’ve got a serious zombie platter.
Of course, are there any other foods in which the head of the animal is super close to the meat that we consume?

  3. Cathy Says:

With turkeys they do include the neck and you can make your own decision from there.

Are you eating more fish than land animal flesh?

It is so you are certain you get the fish you ordered. How else are you going to tell the differece from snapper and talapia? The eye is an added bonus, you get to shoot it to you dinner guests!
