May in Lisbon

Posted by len on May 10th, 2007

So we are now set up in an apartment on the 4th floor of an old building that’s been (partially) renovated. The neighborhood is totally old world. Our landlord said the street, which is an historic old ‘funicular’ trolley line, is our living room. Sure enough, around 8pm the kids start racing up and down, screaming, and generally acting like it’s their play room. Men make quite a bit of noise too with their beers in hand (“Super Bock” is a popular Lisbon brand of cheap beer).
Here’s a view from the balcony down the hill.

And here’s looking the other way up the hill. Good exercise just getting to the grocery store at the top of the hill!

And here’s a little video clip (hopefully you can view it okay) of the trolleys going by below.
Now and again they do the “Rice-a-Roni” bell as they rumble past.

The place looks like it’s a bit of a tangle of wires.

It looks like a fairytale! Really inspiring! Len, are you doing much sketching? Sue, are you able to continue your studies?

One person sees a tangle of wires. One person sees a fairytale. Interesting.

I’ve been getting some sketching in. I’ve been really busy trying to get this damn Moroccan rap video done!
Sue has been super, super busy with her course. It doesn’t look like she’s going to have any time this month for anything besides CELTA training.

In a few days the rap video should be behind me and then I only have a government ocean modeling contract and an animated series to deal with. Plenty of time for sketching then…right? : )

Wow….way cool views there….makes me long for European adventures of Mays past….and I love Rice-a-Roni!

    What is CELTA?

  5. len Says:

CELTA is the name (or an acronym thereof) for the most prestigious and recognized certification that would-be english teachers can get. It takes a month of intensive training by teachers that remind you of characters from Wallace and Gromit. It is based out of Cambridge University in England.

  6. Cathy Says:

Government ocean modeling contract????? Please explain.

  7. len Says:

The skinny on the ocean modeling contract:
While still in Morocco my brother Michael, who is a physicist and works on a lot of government contracts, contacted me about a U.S. Navy research contract that came up for bidding that involved simulating ocean waves near coasts. He thought it sounded fun. So did I. So I helped him write the proposal and we won the contract and now we have to start working on it! It’s supposed to run about 6 months. And then, if they like the work thus far, they give us more money and we work for another while longer.
