Impending parole

Posted by sue on 21st September 2006

I have to admit that the work we’ve been doing so intensely on the house the last couple of months feels a bit like a prison sentence to me. One reason I was excited to devise a plan to leave the country is that I’m SO done with the drudgery of home improvement, which we have been doing almost constantly since buying our house 4 years ago. But the horrible catch is that I have therefore had to spend every day working to finish every little detail that I have put off, plus put in the work to sort through all of our possessions, find a file for every last piece of paper, and handle all the other tedious but necessary little details of life.

But thankfully it is soon coming to an end, because it must! The house is in pretty good shape now, and most of our stuff has been sold, given away, or arranged for moving. It’s starting to feel like our big move is really going to happen!

One Week From Tomorrow…

Posted by len on 21st September 2006

…is when our house moves. We have movers coming to the house and loading our remaining belongings, such as a queen bed, table, and leather dining chairs, into a big truck and taking them to Merrill, Iowa where Sue’s parent’s live on a farm. We had originally planned to store our remaining belongings (most other items were sold at deep, deep discounts to friends in a garage sale two weekends ago) in a Los Angeles-based storage facility. However, we heard horror stories of rates being jacked up every year without warning leaving most people with little recourse but to pay. So, comparing the price, shipping everything to Iowa is just a bit more expensive (about $1600). When our bed goes, so does our home. We’ll probably move in with our friends Lil and Gary starting Thursday night. Makes sense since we’ve been driving their Honda for several weeks now.

The Timeline, For Real

Posted by len on 2nd September 2006

Okay, folks. Sorry we haven’t been touching the blog for a while but our house renovations have been sucking up almost all our time. We are getting close to renting the house and getting excited about leaving.
Here’s the ‘for real’ timeline:
Oct. 1st: Depart Los Angeles by plane for Colorado. Hang there for a few days and then continue on to Merrill, Iowa, to a corn farm where my wife’s parents live. They’re going to crack the whip and make us help with THEIR renovations. We’ll be farming for a week then flying on to Virginia to visit my mom and oldest brother. A few days there then around Oct. 18th we’ll fly to New York City for one day and take a plane to Casablanca, Morocco! A train, we hope, will then take us on to Fez where we’ll hopefully find a place to live…and then the REAL blogging begins!
