Home in Boston

Posted by len on 6th February 2009

Yes, the overseas adventure is officially over.
Thank you to everyone that followed us, even sporadically, on this blog.
We are now both settled in Boston (or more specifically Somerville, right next to Cambridge).
We actually just found our own apartment and it has plenty of room for visitors.
We expect to be moving in near the end of February.
It’s a very Bostonian brick building from the 20’s with those old radiators and old-tymey goodness.
Given that we’re living very ‘normal’ lives again we imagined shutting down Runaway Squid.
However, our parents protested, as, apparently, it is the main way they keep track of us.
So…
Here we go again.

What Nerds Carry With Them

Posted by len on 27th September 2008

Less than a week ago I moved from Portugal to Boston, Massachusetts.
As much as I tried to resist the temptation, over the two years we’ve been away from the US I collected stuff, some technology, some art supplies, and the like. I really needed this stuff…at the time.
So I gave away quite a few things (nothing compared to what we unloaded when we moved away from the US!).

But, I did end up with two large suitcases to haul, both weighing in at 32 kg (70 lbs).

What was in those two suitcases?

– Some clothes (didn’t buy much in this department overseas so most of what I had was getting old and I just donated it to orphans)
– 6 very heavy science and computer books (openGL, wave action, flash)
– 4 computer hard drives (total storage capacity: 1.2 Terabytes)
– 2 console game systems (PS2 and Gamecube)
– 4 game controllers, wires, power supplies, etc.
– flatbed scanner (full A4 page size)
– laptop stand (to elevate it)
– bluetooth keyboard
– small set of oil paints and oil medium and some sketch books
– two bars of portuguese baking chocolate

September 22nd: Halfway Home

Posted by len on 10th September 2008

This crazy ride, the one with incomprehensible words, strange customs, and foreign rhythms, is finally coming to a close, for me.
On September 22nd I’m returning to the country in which I will actually be a legal resident.
I’m moving to Boston, to continue working with the small engineering company I’ve been working for remotely since shortly after I arrived in Morocco so long ago (feels like a REALLY long time ago to me).
Sue is going to continue teaching one more term here in Lisbon and then join me there (unless Boston ends up being a nightmare!- not likely) in late December.

So…prepare for exciting overreaching attempts to make a relatively familiar place like Boston seem wicked interesting and blog-worthy in the months ahead!

The Portuguese sure love their beaches

And you can see why! This is the Santa Cruz beach, near Torres Vedras, where we began our little road trip last week with our friend Fátima.

Traveling

Posted by sue on 12th August 2008

We’re headed out this morning for a mostly unplanned trip to northern Portugal, thinking we’ll be gone for a week or so. I’ll try to post pictures and such from the road, but it will depend on the availability of convenient internet access and whether or not Len is willing to let me use his computer for a few minutes here and there.

Otherwise, Blogust will officially continue when we get back to Lisbon! Até logo!

Sardinhas!

Posted by sue on 9th August 2008

The patron saint of Lisbon is Saint Anthony, and the big celebration here every year is on his feast day. The celebration consists mainly of much eating of sardines and drinking in the streets.

Here are some traditional sardines, pictured alongside the nicest, smartest, most fun guy in Portugal, Shrikesh “Chico” Laxmidas.

Random Lisbon moment

Posted by sue on 9th August 2008

This is Jordan Estêvão, who, despite the Portuguese name with all the crazy accents, is an American and one of my fellow English teachers.

I like this photo because it’s unusual in a couple of ways. First, Jordan is wearing glasses, which is unusual for him because he normally wears contacts. Second, he has, most atypically, the miniature head of Len’s capoeira master, Mestre Nilson, growing out of his chest.
